St Lawrence County

St Lawrence County

County in northern New York State, bounded to the north and northwest by the St Lawrence River; area 7,066 sq km/2,728 sq mi; population (1990) 112,000. Its capital is Canton; Potsdam, Ogdensburg, and Massena are the largest communities. The plains in the north are a leading dairying region, with many other kinds of farming. Maple sugar is produced, and zinc, lead, pyrite, and limestone are mined.

It is the largest county in New York State. The southern part is in the Adirondack Mountains. The mountainous, lake-dotted southeast and the island-filled north are popular resort areas.
