St Matthew Passion

Bach's setting of the Passion narrative as told in St Matthew's Gospel, for soloists, chorus, and orchestra. With interpolated texts by the German poet and cantata librettist Picander and chorales, the work was performed in the church of St Thomas, Leipzig, probably on 11 April 1727 and certainly on 15 April 1729.
