St Peter

City and administrative headquarters of Nicollet County, south-central Minnesota, on the Minnesota River, 19 km/12 mi north of Mankato; population (1990) 9,400. An agricultural trading centre founded in 1854, it grew up around its Episcopal church.

The city is the site of the Old State Capitol Building, built during an unsuccessful attempt to become Minnesota's capital city. Gustavus Adolphus College (1876) is here.
