St Petersburg

Seaside resort and industrial city in Pinellas County, west-central Florida, USA; population (1996 est) 236,000. It lies across Tampa Bay from Tampa, and is notable as a centre for space technology, producing aerospace and electronic equipment. Other industries include tourism, boatbuilding, and seafood-processing. It is a popular retirement location. The city is home to the Florida Suncoast Dome (1991) stadium, St Petersburg Junior College (1927), Eckerd College (1958), and Hillsborough Community College (1968).

St Petersburg was first settled in 1876, laid out in 1884, and grew as a resort with the arrival of the railway in the late 1880s. . With an average of 360 sunny days annually, St Petersburg has been dubbed the ‘Sunshine City’.
