St Simons Island

One of the Sea Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Altamaha River, eastern Georgia, 13 km/8 mi northeast of Brunswick; length 19 km.12 mi; width 5-8 km/3-6 mi; population (1990) 12,000. It is heavily developed with hotels, golf courses, and condominiums, and is connected to Brunswick by causeway.

Fort Frederica, now a national monument, at the northern end, was built by the British troops of James Oglethorpe in 1736-48. St Simons was unsuccessfully attacked by the Spanish in 1742 at the Battle of Bloody Marsh in the south, one of their last attempts to retain control of the southeastern USA.
