St Stephen

Town in southwestern New Brunswick,Canada, on the St Croix River opposite Calais, Maine; population (1990) 4,900. It is closely linked with Maine economically, socially, and by cooperative arrangements. It has several light industries and stages a chocolate festival in August.

Founded in the 1780s by Loyalists, it was a 19th-century lumbering and shipbuilding centre. It amalgamated with Milltown in 1973. The chocolate festival celebrates the creation of what is said to have been the world's first chocolate bar by a local company in 1910. Confectionery is still made here.
