St Thomas

City and administrative headquarters of Elgin County, southern Ontario, Canada, on Kettle Creek, 13 km/8 mi north of Lake Erie and 23 km/14 mi south of London; population (1991) 29,990. It manufactures car parts, tools, construction equipment, bearings, pipe, and paper products.

Established in the 1800s on crown lands as the centre of the Talbot settlement, which by the 1830s had peopled some 30 townships in this part of Ontario, it later developed as a rail and industrial centre.
