St-Etienne

City in south-central France, administrative centre of the Loire département, Rhônes-Alpes region; population (1990 est) 201,600, conurbation 313,000. St-Etienne is situated on the River Furens 51 km/32 mi southwest of Lyon. Industries include the manufacture of aircraft engines, electronics, and chemicals. It is the site of a school of mining established in 1816. In World War I it was one of the principal French arsenals.

It has been a centre of iron and then steel industries since the 16th century, but the coalfield on which it was founded has now ceased production. The main street of St-Etienne runs in a straight line north–south for a distance of 5 km/3 mi.
