St-Niklaas

Town in the province of East Flanders, Belgium, 19 km/12 mi west of Antwerp; population (1991 est) 68,200. It manufactures woollen, cotton, and linen goods, carpets, pottery, bricks, and furniture. The marketplace in St-Niklaas, the Groote Markt, is the largest in the country. The municipal museum contains a collection of maps and globes made by the cartographer Gerardus Mercator.

St-Niklaas was the capital of Waasland, an ancient district of east Flanders with particularly fertile soil, adjoining the present Zeeland province of the Netherlands. The quiet countryside around the town is popular with tourists.
