St Clairsville

City and administrative headquarters of Belmont County, eastern Ohio, 16 km/10 mi west of the Ohio River and Wheeling, West Virginia; population (1990) 5,200. It is a trading centre for a dairy farming and coalmining district, where oil and natural gas are also developed.

The Union Humane Society, an antislavery organization, was founded here in 1815.
