Staël, Nicolas de

    0.04 sec.

Staël, Nicolas de (1914-1955)

Russian-born French painter. He was influenced by the cubist Georges Braque but about 1945 developed a distinctive semi-abstract style in which the suggestions of figure, landscape, or still life are created by large, flat areas of strong colours spread with a palette knife.

He was born in St Petersburg, his family emigrating from Russia 1919. He was brought up in Brussels, Belgium, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts 1932-33, and moved to France 1937, settling in Paris 1943.
