staccato| In music, a term used to describe playing notes in a short, detached manner, rather than legato (smoothly, or ‘joined’). Each note is sounded for only part of its written value and this is indicated by a dot placed above or below the note. Staccato gives an upbeat feel to a passage, for example the opening of the scherzo to Beethoven's Symphony no. 6 (Pastoral, 1808). |
