Stade

City in Lower Saxony, Germany, 140 km/87 mi northwest of Hannover; population (1994) 180,400. There are oil-refining, nuclear-power, chemical, and aluminium industries in this industrial growth area. The town was formerly a member of the medieval Hanseatic League trade federation.

Stade once stood on the Elbe, but owing to a change in the course of the river, the town now lies 5 km/3 mi upstream on the Schwinge.
