Stadlen, Peter (1910-1996)

Austrian-born British pianist and critic. He studied at the Vienna Hochschule. From 1934 he gave concerts, including the first performance of Webern's Variations op. 27, in 1937. He moved to England in 1939, and taught at Darmstadt (1947-51), where he gave the local first performance of Schoenberg's Piano Concerto (1948). He was a music critic with the Daily Telegraph from 1960, and was chief critic between 1977 and 1986. He wrote articles including ‘Serialism Reconsidered’, ‘Beethoven and the Metronome’ (1967), and ‘Berg's Cryptography’.
