Ordinary musical notation, so called to distinguish it from tonic sol-fa notation, which does not use staves and notes.

Both primo and secondo parts are written in normal grand staff notation, with the instruction to play up (primo) or down (secondo) an octave.
However, according to Richard Baker, head of composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, understanding staff notation is far from a sine qua non of musical excellence.
Even still, guitar tabs are easier to read than learning staff notation.
