White Sea-Baltic Canal

Waterway in the Russian Federation, connecting the White Sea with Lake Onega, and through it with the Baltic Sea and the Volga. It has a total length 227 km/141 mi, of which 37 km/23 mi are artificial; there are 19 locks.

The idea of a White Sea-Baltic Canal was first raised at the time of Peter (I) the Great, though no work was undertaken. Surveying was first carried out in 1915-16, and the waterway was eventually built in 1930-33 by forced labour.
