Stamford

City in Fairfield County, southwest Connecticut, USA, on Long Island Sound, 56 km/35 mi northeast of New York City; population (2000) 117,100. It is a commercial and industrial centre, and the site of numerous corporate headquarters. Products include computers, hardware, rubber, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. Easy access to New York by rail and the Connecticut Turnpike has made the city a dormitory for the metropolis.

Founded in 1641 on land purchased from the American Indian Sagamore people, the settlement was named after Stamford in Britain.

In old days Stamford had never been a particular crony of mine, but now I hailed him with enthusiasm, and he, in his turn, appeared to be delighted to see me.
I recall that on one occasion I obtained information that led me to believe that a gentleman who lived about two miles out in the country from Stamford, Conn.
The streets of Stamford were deserted as they passed through the town; and its old churches rose, frowning and dark, from the whitened ground.
