Standard, Battle of the

Defeat of David I of Scotland's invasion of England at Cowton, near Northallerton, on 22 August 1138 by forces raised by the archbishop of York. David invaded the north of England in support of Matilda against King Stephen and to support his own claim to much of northern England. The archbishop's army were arranged around a cart displaying the standards of the northern English saints.
