Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey et al v. US

US Supreme Court decision of 1911 dealing with the dissolution of unreasonable corporate monopolies. The Standard Oil Co., ordered to dissolve after being convicted of an attempt to eliminate free competition in the industry, appealed to the Supreme Court. The Court upheld the conviction formulating a new subjective definition of an illegal trust as ‘an unreasonable attempt’ to restrain competition in trade.
