Stanhope

Town in northern New Jersey, 13 km/8 mi northwest of Dover; population (1990) 3,400. It is best known today as the site of Waterloo Village. This ironworking settlement has been reconstructed and restored, together with a recreated Delaware village. A summer music festival is held here.

History

Settled in 1714, Stanhope became a major ironworking town on the old Morris Canal. The first anthracite furnace in the USA was built here, in 1821. A few ironworkers' cottages are preserved. Waterloo Village was originally an independent village, established about1760 as Andover Forge; it was renamed after Napoleon's defeat in 1815.
