Stanley
Town on eastern Falkland, capital of the Falkland Islands; population (1991) 1,557. After changing its name only once between 1843 and 1982, it was renamed five times in the space of six weeks during the Falklands War April–June 1982.

Francis Edgar Stanley was a portrait painter and a photographer in Maine who with his twin brother Freelan O Stanley jointly invented the ‘Stanley Steamer’ in 1896, the first steam motorcar in New England. They built 100 cars and later organized the Stanley Motor Carriage Company. They made over 10,000 ‘Steamers’. |
| They were both born in Kingfield, Maine. They formed the Stanley Dry Plate Company in 1883. They sold the business to Eastman Kodak Company in 1905. Francis was president of the motor car company until the business was sold when he died in a car crash in 1918. |
