Stanton, Edwin McMasters

Stanton, Edwin McMasters (1814-1869)

US public official, secretary of war 1862-68. A lawyer and a Democrat, he was appointed US attorney general by President Buchanan 1860 and then secretary of war by Republican president Lincoln 1862.

Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Stanton attended Kenyon College, was admitted to the bar 1836, and gained a reputation as a skilled lawyer. As secretary of war he was an effective, if autocratic administrator. Although retained in office by President A Johnson, Stanton eventually broke with him over Reconstruction policies and was forced to resign 1868. He was named to the US Supreme Court 1869 by President Grant, but died before taking office.
