Stapledon, (William) Olaf

    0.01 sec.

Stapledon, (William) Olaf (1886-1950)

English science fiction novelist. He attracted notice with his debut novel Last and First Men (1931), a history of humanity through future aeons. The immensely broad canvas characteristic of Stapledon is also present in the acclaimed Star Maker (1937).

Stapledon was born near Liverpool and studied at Oxford and at Liverpool, where he later lectured in psychology and philosophy. A pacifist, he served in an ambulance unit in World War I. His non-fiction includes A Modern Theory of Ethics (1929).

The themes of his fiction are ethics, nonreligious metaphysics on a grand scale, and human limitations in the quest for enlightenment. Star Maker aims for a truly universal philosophy in a study of two alien species and ends in a confrontation with the creator. The hero of the psychologically insightful Sirius (1944) is a dog with the intelligence of a human.
