Starek, Jíří (1928- )

Czech conductor. He studied in Prague, where he was chief conductor of the Radio Orchestra (1953-68). He was music director of the Collegium Musicum Pragense (1963-68). He also led the RIAS Sinfonietta in Berlin (1976-80), the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra (1981-84), and the Pfalztheater in Germany (1989-92). He was guest conductor with the San Francisco chamber orchestra, the Munich and Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestras, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He returned to conduct in Prague in 1990 (Dvorák's New World symphony), after a politically-enforced absence.
