Stargard

Stargard

Town in Szczecin province, Poland, on the River Ina, 36 km/22 mi east of Szczecin; population (1990) 71,000. Founded in the 12th century, it became a member of the medieval Hanseatic League trading confederation. It remained in German Pomerania until 1945; from 1648 as part of Brandenburg under the Treaty of Westphalia.
