Starker, János (1924- )

Hungarian-born American cellist. He studied at the Budapest Academy of Music, becoming first cello in the Budapest Opera orchestra. In 1946 he settled in the USA, playing with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (1949-53), and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1953-58). In 1958 he became a professor at Indiana University, Bloomington. As a soloist he toured widely in both Europe and America, and was well known in the solo suites of Bach.
