Starr, Ringo (1940– )English rock and pop drummer with the legendary English rock group the Beatles. Starr replaced original Beatles' drummer Pete Best in 1962. He occasionally sang vocals for the group, including on ‘Yellow Submarine’ (1966). After the group split up in 1970, he pursued a solo musical career. He has also appeared in films and as a broadcaster on children's television, including narrating the series Thomas the Tank Engine 1984–96. Born in Liverpool, England, he was an apprentice engineer before joining the Beatles. His solo albums include Ringo (1973), Goodnight Vienna (1974), and A Vertical Man (1998).
