Starzer, Josef (1726-1787)

Austrian composer and violinist. Violinist at the French theatre in Vienna from 1752, he was court composer and leader of the orchestra in St Petersburg 1758-70. Back in Vienna he wrote music for the choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre's ballets and was active in the Tonkünstler-Society, for whose concerts he re-orchestrated Handel's Judas Maccabeus in 1779. From 1783 Decreasing fitness forced his retirement.
