State College

Town in central Pennsylvania, 112 km/70 mi northwest of Harrisburg; population (1990) 38,900. It is the commercial centre for the main campus (1855) of Pennsylvania State University, which is in the University Park section. State College also serves as a shipping point for the products of surrounding farmlands, especially oats and pigs.

In the late 18th century it was at the core of a charcoal and iron industry.
