Statesville

City and administrative headquarters of Iredell County, west-central North Carolina, in the Piedmont, 64 km/40 mi north of Charlotte; population (1990) 17,600. An industrial centre in a dairying and tobacco producing region, it manufactures tobacco products, textiles, furniture, metal products, machinery, processed foods, and flour.

It was settled in 1750 as Fourth Creek, by Scotch-Irish and Germans from Maryland and Pennsylvania, and established as Statesville in 1789. Mitchell Community College (1852) is here.
