independent event

In statistics, an unconnected event whose occurrence has no effect on the probability of another event happening. For example, if a coin is tossed and a die thrown at the same time, the events of ‘getting a head on the coin’ and ‘throwing a six on the die’ are independent, because they have no connection with each other.

Multiplication rule for probability

If events A and B are independent, then P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B).

So when a die is thrown and a coin is tossed, P(H and 6) = P(H) × P(6) = 1/2 × 1/6 = 1/12.
