Staunton

Independent city and capital of (but administratively separate from) Augusta County, north-central Virginia, 56 km/35 mi northwest of Charlottesville; population (1990) 24,500. It produces flour, clothing, furniture, and air conditioners, and is a shipping centre for livestock and fruit.

Settled in 1732, Staunton served briefly as the capital of Virginia in 1781, and was occupied twice by Union forces during the American Civil War. It is the seat of Mary Baldwin College (1842). The birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson is now a museum.
