Stavanger

Seaport and capital of Rogaland county, southwest Norway, 160 km/100 mi south of Bergen; population (1994) 104,000. It is Norway's fourth-largest city, and since 1969 has been the centre of the country's North Sea oil exploration and oil rig construction, with many multinational oil companies operating from here. It is also the centre of a sheep farming area. There is an important shipyard, and much shipping is registered in Stavanger. There was formerly a large fish-canning industry with more than 100 factories, but this has been in decline since the 1960s.

Stavanger has a 12th-century Gothic cathedral, built by Bishop Reinald from Winchester, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1272 and restored in 1886.
