Ste Croix

River forming the boundary between Maine, USA, and New Brunswick, Canada, from its origin in the Chiputneticook Lakes to Passamaquoddy Bay, opposite Novia Scotia; length 121 km/75 mi.

History

Textile milling and hydroelectric development have been important at Calais, Maine–St Stephen, New Brunswick. In 1604 Samuel de Champlain and the Sieur de Monts established the first French settlement in North America here on Dochet (Ste Croix) Island, southeast of Calais; after a harsh winter, the colony moved to Port Royal, in modern Nova Scotia.
