aeolipile

Pivoted metallic ball partly filled with water, which has tubes projecting horizontally from it. When heated, steam rushes out of the tubes, setting the ball in motion. It was first described by Hero of Alexandria and was considered a toy but can be thought of as the forerunner of the steam turbine.
