Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs

City and administrative headquarters of Routte County, northwestern Colorado, on the Yampa River, 148 km/92 mi southwest of Fort Collins; population (1990) 6,700. It is a noted winter resort, and holds a winter carnival as well as a summer music festival.

Settled in 1874, it became popular largely for its over 150 mineral springs. Facilities for skiing and ski jumping were introduced in 1913. It is the headquarters of the nearby Routt National Forest.
