Steichen, Edward Jean (1879-1973)

Luxembourg-born US photographer, who with Alfred Stieglitz helped to establish photography as an art form. His style evolved during his career from painterly Impressionism to realism.

During World War I he helped to develop aerial photography, and in World War II he directed US naval-combat photography. He turned to fashion and advertising 1923-38, working mainly for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines. He was in charge of the Museum of Modern Art's photography collection 1947-62, where in 1955 he organized the renowned ‘Family of Man’ exhibition.
