Steilacoom

Town in west-central Washington, on Puget Sound, 13 km/8 mi southwest of Tacoma; population (1990) 5,700. It is mainly residential, with a large state hospital. Tourists are drawn to historic buildings, including many state ‘firsts’.

Settled in 1850, it became the first incorporated community in Washington in 1854. It was an important 19th-century port.
