Steinbach, Emil (1849-1919)

German conductor and composer. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and became a conductor and theatre director at Mainz. He composed orchestral works, chamber music, and songs. He gave the first public performance of the Siegfried Idyll (1877), and conducted Tristan und Isolde and Siegfried at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1893.
