Steinberg, Maksimilian Osseievich (1883–1946)

Russian composer. Stravinsky's Fireworks was given its first performance at his wedding in 1908.

He studied at St Petersburg University and Conservatory. He was the pupil (and later son-in-law) of Rimsky-Korsakov, and also studied with Liadov and Glazunov. He became professor at the Leningrad Conservatory.

Stage

ballets Midas (after Ovid) and Till Eulenspiegel; incidental music.

Choral and orchestral

oratorio Heaven and Earth (after Byron); four symphonies (1907, 1909, 1929, 1933), dramatic fantasy on Ibsen's Brand, overture to Maeterlinck's La Princesse Maleine, and other orchestral works; violin concerto (1946).

Other

two string quartets; songs, including two Tagore cycles, folk song arrangements.
