Steinberg, Pinchas (1945- )

US conductor. He studied at Tanglewood, where he made his debut in 1964. From 1967 he was associate conductor at the Chicago Lyric Opera, making his debut with Don Giovanni. He conducted symphony orchestras in Europe from 1972; appeared at Frankfurt Opera from 1979, and led opera in Hamburg, Berlin, and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. He was music director at Bremen (1985-89), and chief conductor at the Verona Arena (1989). He conducted La Wally at the 1990 Bregenz Festival, and a concert performance of Rossini's Tancredi, at the 1992 Salzburg Festival.
