Steinberg, Saul

Steinberg, Saul (1914–1999)

Romanian-born US artist. He is known for the cartoons he contributed to the New Yorker and other magazines. His work portrays a childlike personal world with allusions to the irrational and absurd.

Steinberg was educated at the University of Bucharest and received his doctorate in architecture from the Reggio Politecnico in Milan in 1940. Embarking on a career as a painter and cartoonist, he emigrated to the USA in 1942. During World War II he served as a US intelligence officer in Italy. He was inducted into the US National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1968.
