Steinbrenner, George (Michael III) (1930– )

US businessman and baseball executive. Chairman of the Cleveland-based American Shipbuilding Co., he became the principal owner of the New York Yankees in 1973 and club president 1979–90. In 2000 the Yankees won the World Series, the sixth championship of Steinbrenner's ownership.

He was born in Rocky River, Ohio. He was constantly involved in controversies with his players and managers, usually ending in their abrupt departure. He was suspended from baseball 1990–92 for conduct detrimental to the game, but returned to the franchise in 1993, promising to keep a somewhat lower profile. Known for his impatient managerial style, he changed managers 20 times during his first 23 years in charge. In 2006, he passed on the management of the Yankees to his sons Hank and Hal.
