Steinmetz, Charles Proteus (1865–1923)

US engineer who formulated the Steinmetz hysteresis law in 1891, which describes the dissipation of energy that occurs when a system is subject to an alternating magnetic force.

He worked on the design of alternating current transmission and from 1894 to his death served as consulting engineer to General Electric.
