Stellarton

Town in north-central Nova Scotia, Canada, 5 km/3 mi southwest of New Glasgow; population (1991) 5,200. Formerly a mine centre, it now has several manufacturing operations and a community college.

Coal was discovered here in 1798 and mined until the 1950s. The town was called Albion Mines from the 1820s to the 1870s, then renamed after the local (stellar) coal. Pioneering mine and railway machinery was developed here in the 1820s.
