Stellenbosch

Town in Western Cape Province, South Africa, 48 km/30 mi east of Cape Town, west of the Drakenstein Mountains; population (1991) 19,950 (urban area), (1991) 73,800 (district). It is the centre of a wine-producing district. Founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, it is the oldest European settlement in South Africa after Cape Town.

The site of Stellenbosch was selected by Simon Van der Stel, one of the earliest and most progressive governors of the Cape. It has an attractive Rhenish church, which stands in the Braak or village square, with a fine pulpit carved by Anton Anreith. The town is a centre of Afrikaner culture. Stellenbosch University was founded in 1918; James Barry Hertzog, Jan Christian Smuts, and F D Malan, all prime ministers of South Africa, were educated here.
