Stephen, George (1829-1921)

Scottish-born Canadian financier. He became president of the Bank of Montréal. In partnership with his cousin Donald Smith, he purchased the St Paul and Pacific railway; they then started construction of the Canadian Pacific railway, completed 1885.

Stephen was born in Dufftown, Banffshire, and emigrated to Canada 1850. He was made a baron 1886 and a peer 1891. He left Canada 1888, and lived in Scotland and England. A great philanthropist, he gave generously to hospitals in London, Montréal, and Aberdeen.
