Girard

Town in Trumbull County, northeast Ohio; population (1990) 11,300. It is situated on the Mahoning River, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Youngstown. The town is in the heart of a steel manufacturing region, and the glow of deposits dumped from smelting furnaces can be seen at night. The town's first iron works, dating from 1866, is still in operation. Aluminium, plastics, tools and dies, and leather are also produced.

The Ohio and Erie Canal (1837) cut through Girard and fostered its industrial growth, remaining important to the city's economy until 1867, when a railway line was established.
