Stephens, John Lloyd (1805-1852)

US explorer, archaeologist, and travel writer. Working with the British architect and illustrator Frederick Catherwood, he explored the ruined Maya cities of Central America. They recorded their findings in Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan 1841 and Incidents of Travel in Yucatan 1843.

Stephens was born in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and originally trained as a lawyer. He was cofounder of the Panama railway company. His journey to Central America was undertaken without maps and on mules.
