Stephenville

Town in southwestern Newfoundland, Canada, on the north shore of St George's Bay, 64 km/40 mi southwest of Corner Brook; population (1991) 7,600. It produces newsprint. An annual drama festival draws visitors.

Settled in the 1840s as a fishing and farming community, it was the site (1941–66) of Harmon Air Force Base, a US facility and major employer.

Stephenville

City and administrative headquarters of Erath County, north-central Texas, on the Bosque River, 126 km/78 mi northwest of Waco; population (1990) 13,500. It is a noted nursery centre, and the hub for an area producing cotton, pecans, peanuts, grain, dairy goods, and poultry.

It was settled in the 1850s. Tarleton State University (1899) is here, along with a Texas A & M research centre.
